The Garden Club of Marion Receives Grants

The Garden Club of Marion has been awarded a $1,000.00 grant from the Principal Financial Group® Civic Development Grant Program, "Let Freedom Ring." The garden club was one of 207 civic development entries from 46 states. The funds will be used to honor those who serve our country by landscaping the area around the Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Marion National Cemetery. The National Garden Clubs, Inc. established the grant program under the sponsorship of the Principal Financial Group Foundation Inc. to boost civic development across the nation and honor service members at the same time.

"We are thrilled to receive this financial gift from The Principal and the National Garden Clubs. The dollars will make it possible for us to enhance the Blue Star area with landscaping, benches and a walkway to the marker and the 5 service flag poles," said Judy Fornshell, President of the garden club. "Projects like this in Marion bolster civic pride among residents and help make our community attractive to visitors. We are also proud to pay homage to the service men and women from our community who have so bravely served our nation."

"We are pleased to once again work with the National Garden Clubs, Inc., to support these patriotic community projects across the nation," said Libby Jacobs, assistant director, the Principal Financial Group. The Marion National Cemetery Blue Star project is an inspiring program that instills pride in the community and pride in our service people."

We are working hard to obtain the funds needed to complete this wonderful area in the cemetery. To date this is the third grant received, the first being from the Marion Chamber of Commerce. Close to $2,500.00 was awarded to the club from the Marion Rotary Christmas Tree Auction. Local donations from service clubs and members have been made and we will work on other grants to obtain our $8,000.00 goal for this project said President Fornshell. We are very happy to have such wonderful support for the cemetery and our involvement in this endeavor. Marion is very fortunate to have the only National Cemetery in the State of Indiana.
